Mechanical Engineering

I am Çiğdem Susantez. I am the Vice President of Mechanical Engineering Department. Since 2009, I have been working at Trakya University. I have studies on drying, phase change materials, genetic algorithm, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Our Mechanical Engineering Department is under the Faculty of Engineering of Trakya University. In general, our courses given in the first year, are mainly based on science and mathematics. Courses such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Computer Programming can be given as examples. In the following years, courses such as Thermodynamics, Dynamics, Machine Elements are offered to our engineering students. Then, in the 3rd and 4th years, the optional Mechanical Design and Thermal Design courses come into play and our students focus on the specific topics of mechanical engineering. They specialize in the field by learning the subjects of mechanical engineering in detail in order to solve the problems they will encounter in the private sector such as Factory Organization, Manufacturing Methods, Cooling Systems, Energy Production Systems, and Applied Thermodynamics. Our department has laboratories for 5 main branches of our discipline. In the Mechanics field, friction and notch impact trainings are given; In our laboratories belonging to the Energy and Thermodynamics fields, measurement experiments such as hydraulic machines, emissivity, orifice flow measurement are carried out. Apart from that, in the Machine Theory and Dynamics field, experiments are carried out in order to reinforce the subjects of servomotor and measurement technique. Manufacturing and Construction field has a workshop where the work on manufacturing continues. In our department, Thermodynamics and Energy laboratory, Machine Theory and Dynamics laboratory, construction and manufacturing laboratory, and mechanics laboratory serve for the education of our students. By practicing here, our students can improve their own professional skills.
In order for our students to graduate, they must complete 2 internships, each of which is for 20 days. These are: General workshop internship and business organization internship. Also, they must successfully complete 3 project courses. In each of them, our students are given training to solve the problems they will encounter in their professional lives, and as engineers, and they are improved greatly in this regard. Our students can continue their education abroad. We have exchange programs such as Erasmus and Mevlana. Anadolu Energy Symposium was held by our department in 2018. In 2019, the Hydrogen Congress was held, followed by the Exergy and Applications Summer School. Our graduates from the Department of Mechanical Engineering can work in various fields. Although there is no specific field, they can find job opportunities in many sectors from the textile sector to rocket production, including the automotive industry, refrigeration, and air conditioning applications. Candidates who will choose our department will start their careers with a significant plus, especially since 30% of our education is in English, together with the education they will receive here. However, candidates who come to our university need to decide on the sectors they will work before hand and acquire the relevant skills needed during their education, since the Mechanical Engineers can pursue different job opportunities in different sectors. For instance, If they are interested in cooling systems, they should take Cooling and Energy courses. Trakya University has various student societies such as Bicycle Club, Chess Club, and Underwater Club. It is also an important advantage that the dormitories are close to the university.
