Computer Engineering

I am Professor Muharrem Tolga Sakallı. I am the Head of the Computer Engineering Department at Trakya University. My fields of study are Information Security and Cryptology. After completing my undergraduate education at Istanbul Technical University Control Computer Engineering, I completed master's and doctorate programs in Trakya University in 2002 and 2006. In 2006, I conducted a 4-month research at the Belgian Catholic University of Leuven, Kosik Research Group. Our Computer Engineering Department was founded in 1991. It consists of 3 main branches of science. These are the Department of Computer Science, Department of Computer Hardware, Department of Computer Software. We started providing education with 34 students in 1991. So we have 30 years of experience. Our aim in the Computer Engineering Department is to train great individuals and proper computer engineers who have software and hardware knowledge, who can solve problems, and implement a systematic approach. In the Computer Engineering Department, there are two types of courses in our curriculum. These are compulsory courses and elective courses. The purpose of compulsory courses is to prepare the student for computer engineering and to strengthen the software and hardware knowledge they have. Courses such as C Sharp and Database Programming courses such as Discrete Mathematics, Operating Systems, Database courses are given. Of course, I have counted just some of them. The aim of our elective courses is to develop the vision of our students, so they can carry on with their specific studies in master’s and doctorate programs. Among these courses, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning are the courses in the Machine Learning subset. We have courses on Cyber Security such as Introduction to Cryptology. We have many elective courses. We have 5 laboratories in our Computer Engineering Department. We have 2 computer labs with forty computers, 1 Electrical lab, 1 Embedded Systems lab and a Mobile Application lab, which is the place that we are in right now. We offer 2 internships in our Computer Engineering Department. These are the Hardware and Software internships. Especially the fact that our Technopark has 103 companies with great breakthroughs recently and that approximately 80% of these 103 companies belong to the IT sector provides great opportunities for our students. We receive support from these companies for internships. About 20 faculty members and lecturers work in our Computer Engineering Department. It’s a good number. In the last year, especially the 2-semester projects provide our faculty and students with the opportunity to work one-on-one. In these projects, they can solve various problems, producing both software and hardware solutions.
We have made various Erasmus agreements as Trakya University Computer Engineering Department. These agreements were done with European countries and European universities. For instane, The University of Milan in Italy and also other universities in Poland and Bulgaria. It is possible for us to make new agreements in line with the support and wishes of our students. Computer Engineering faculty members participate in conferences such as UBMK (International Conference on Computer Science and Engineering) and ISCTurkey (International Conference on Information Security and Cryptology) nationally. UBMK Conference is the International Conference of Computer Engineers. ISCTurkey is an important conference in the field of cyber security. Computer Engineering students study different subjects and fields. There are very important fields of work in the private and public sectors. For example, they work on network administration, system administration, data science, machine learning, deep learning. We can add cyber security to that list. Lately, cyber security has become a very important issue and it has great employment opportunities in our country and in the world. In this context, informatics is our most important field and thanks to informatics, our students can find jobs in various places, in the private sector and in the public sector. The mathematical knowledge of our students who want to study in Computer Engineering, and in this context, the knowledge related to discrete structures need to be developed. Of course, not only that, but students who can develop their problem-solving skills, and implement a systematic approach, can also by successful in this department, and I would like to say that we would be very happy to see students choose Computer Engineering. Trakya University is a great university established in Edirne. It also makes various investments in the field of informatics. In addition, I think that Edirne will make an important contribution to students, especially in the social sense, due to its student-friendliness. In addition, another beautiful aspect of Edirne is both its historical importance and its proximity to two countries, Greece and Bulgaria. I believe, especially in terms of internationalization, it provides us with an advantage. We’d like to invite students who want to study in Computer Engineering to our great department.
